Chapter 5

• What did Mollie do?

  At the beginning of winter Mollie tried to get out of doing work at every oppurtunity that she could
• What did Clover see Mollie do?>

  She saw Mollie allowing one of Mr Pilkington's men to stroke her on the nose while talking to her
• What did clover do?

  Clover went into Mollie's stall and turned over her hay to find that she was a little pile of sugar and a few ribbbons.
• What happened three days later, after the confrontation that Clover had with Mollie?

  Mollie ran away, and was seen at Willingdon by the pigeons between the shafts of a dogcart painted red and black. Beside a red faced man who fed her sugar cubes.
• What happened in January?

  The weather was terribly cold and the land became as strong as iron, making it difficult for the animals to farm. Pigs were left in making the decisions about the farming for the following season. The weather is a foreshadowment of the terrible change to come.
• What happened between Snowball and Napolean?

  The two pigs disagreed at every opportunity. snowball normally won because of his eloquent speeched but Napolean conjured up support in between time.
• Which farm animal supported him?

  The sheep. they took up bleating four legs good, two legs bad
• After surveying the land, what did Snowballl declare?

  He declared that the long pastures not far from the farm buildings , there was a knoll which would be the place for a windmill which could power a dynamo and supply electricity to the farm. It could also run a circular saw, a chaff cutter and mangel-slicer and an electric milking machine. This meant that the machines would do the work for them while they grazed in the grass
• Where did snowball's plans come from?

  They came from three books which had belonged to Mr. Jones
• How many days a week would the animals need to work if the windmill was built?

  If it was built the animals only needed to work three days a week. They were divided
• What did the two factions call for?

  The one for Snowball was, "Vote for snowball and the three day week" and the other for Napoleon was "Vote for Napoleon and the full manger"
• What did Napolean say would happen if they did not put the windmill plan asside?

  That it was more important to increase food instead of waste time on the windmills which would lead to death
• Who was the only character who did not take sides?

  Benjamin, "Windmill or no windmill, he said, life would go on as it had always gone on." - pg 37
• What was the other isssue which faced the animals?

  The issue of the humans trying to possible carry out another attack on the farm.
• What were the two opposing views, Napoleon and Snowball?

  Napoleon wanted the animals to get firearms and train the usage of them as a means of defence.Whereas Snowball wanted more and more pigeons to be sent out to stir up more rebellion amongst the other animals on the other farms.Napoleon argued that if they couldn't defend themselves they would be conquered and snowball argued that if rebellions happened everywhere then there wouldn't be need for defense. however the animals couldn't make up their minds
• What did Napoleon do during Snowball's eloquent appeal for the animals to vote for the windmill?

  Napoleon called his nine trained dogs who came barking in with brass studded collars. Which chased snowball out of the farm.
• What were some of the changes which Napoleon made?

  The sunday morning meetings were ended, and in future questions relating to the working of the farm would be discussed by a special commitee of pigs. They would meet in private then communicate their decisions to the others afterwards. They assembled every morning to sing 'Beasts of England', salute the flag and recieve their orders
• What shows the begginning of oppression?

  When four pigs were speaking against what Napoleon was doing, the dogs let out a menacing growl which silenced them
• What did squealer say?

  Squealer went round explaining the new methods which would be put into place by Napoleon. He used fear mongering tactics to make sure the animals did not turn against Napoleon's decisions. he used the rhetorical querstion of, "you do not want Jones back?" pg 40
• What new moto did Boxer take up?

  Napoleon is always right
• What changes happened?

  The animals did not sit all together like they used to. Napoleon sat with Squealer another pig named Minimus, a pig whom had a remarkable gift of composing music and poem with the nine dogs
• What else did squealer convince the animals that is probably a lie?

  He told the animals that the plans for the windmill was actually napoleons which snowball faced and the reason why he was "opposed" them was his tactic of getting rid of Snowball. The animals didn't quite understand it but there were three dogs with squealer which growled loud enough to oppress any questions or contradictions which they may have had
• What did Napoleon say about the windmill?

  The windmill was to be built which would need the animals to work very hard and may cause a decrease in their rations
