  • Individuals may have their own religious beliefs without belonging to a religious organisation, (e.g. Grace Davie's concept of believing without belonging) but most people express their faith through organisations, and those organisations tend to shape their beliefs.
  • Alongside the growth of believing without belonging, religious organisations maintain the consistency of religious beliefs in the societies with religious pluralism and non-religious belief systems.
European society has experienced secularisation which has decentred religion and different religious belief systems now co-exist.
  • What are the key differences between individual beliefs and practices and those associated with religious organisations?
Religious organisations cause people to have common core beliefs and values whereas beliefs and practices become heterogeneous once people begin practicing individually.
