2.1B Classifying coasts

Cards (6)

  • Geology (LT) = characteristics of land, including lithology and structure
  • Sea level change (LT) = can be used to classify coasts as emergent or submergent
  • Energy inputs (ST) = Coasts receive energy inputs from waves , tides , currents. atmospheric processes, gravity and tectonics
    -> Used to classify coasts as high energy and low energy.
  • Sediment inputs (ST) = Coasts receive sediment inputs from waves and wind, tides, currents, mass movement and tectonic processes.
    -> added to a coastline through deposition and removed by erosion.
  • Emergent coastline = where the sea level is dropping and new Land is appearing
    -> Scotland coastline (Isle of Arran)
  • Submergent coastline = where the sea is flooding the land
    ->e.g. Kingsbridge in Devon
