  • In 1656, Naylor entered Bristol on a donkey as a re-enactment of Palm Sunday.
  • The quaker was accused of Blasphemy and brought before Parliament who acted as a judge and jury.
  • Naylor was whipped, pilloried in London, had a hole made in his tongue, branded, made to ride a donkey backwards to Bristol and then whipped and imprisoned.
  • Naylor's punishment was an echo of the Prynne, Burton and Bastwick case. This was a last straw for Cromwell and he lost patience with Parliament. He believed they had too much power as they acted as judge and jury.
