• Cromwell took a month to decide. Cromwell alienated his new friends whilst hisprolonged hesitations displeased his old ones.
• He received a petition of 100 officers in March opposing monarchy
• In May 1657 he formally rejected the proposition but still crowned with many of the trappings of royalty in June 1657.
