  • Parliament which reassembled in January 1658 was very different to the earlier one
  • It was operating under Humble Petition and Advice. Included many who had been excluded by the Instrument of Government and many republicans.
  • Both groups were intent on challenging the authority of new system
  • The Commons were much harder to manage as Cromwell’s supporters had gone to the Upper House
  • They delayed voting supply for the Spanish War
  • Cromwell feared troops would be unpaid and the country vulnerable to attack. Thus he dissolved Parliament in February. It was not recalled until after his death.
  • On 3rd September 1658 Cromwell died. He was succeed by his son Richard
  • In May 1659 Richard resigned and the Protectorate was over. England temporarily reverted to aCommonwealth
  • The Jews petitioned Cromwell but he rejected it. However, he did allow them to settle in England silently.
  • The reason Cromwell permitted Jews into England was that he believed the Second coming of christ was imminent and that Jews would convert to christianity.
