• a tissue is a group of similar cells that have a similar function
• epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous are the 4 main types of animal tissue
• epithelial tissue is made up of a single layer of cells that cover the inner and outer surfaces - they protect other tissues
• human skin is a type of epithelial tissue
• connective tissue binds other tissues together -example - bone, tendon, ligaments
• Skeletal, smooth and cardiac are the three types of muscular tissue
• adaptation of muscular tissues is to contract/shorten
• Skeletal muscle is a voluntary muscle that allows us to move
• smooth muscle is involuntary muscle - examples include muscles in arteries and veins
• cardiac muscle is found in the heart and is different to other muscle tissues are it does not tire - involuntary
• plant tissues can be divided into 4 main types - dermal, ground, vascular and meristematic
• dermal tissue covers and protects the surfaces of plants
• ground tissue fills the inside of a plant - its function depends on its location - can include photosynthesis or food storage
• the main function of vascular tissue is to transport materials around the plant
• there are two types of vascular tissue - xylem and phloem
• meristematic tissue is where growth (mitosis) occurs in the plant - eg shoot and root tips
• Xylem tissue transports water and minerals from the roots to the aerial parts of the plant - movement always upwards
• Phloem tissue transports food around the plant - movement can go up or down
• Tissus culturing is the growth or tissue and/or cells outside of the organism - eg cancer reasearch or ivf
• an organ is a group of tissues that work together to carry out similar function
• A system is a group of organs that works together to carry out a similar function
• shoot system - all parts of the plant that are above ground
• root system - all parts that are below ground
