As volcanic bombs- lumps of molten rock that solidify as they explode out of the vent and fall to Earth
An active volcano is erupting or has erupted recently and is likely to erupt again
A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for 10,000 years but could become active again
An extinct volcanoes hasn’t erupted for the last million years and will probably never erupt again
Shield Volcano - A volcano with gentle slopes. They form from runny lava which spreads from its source
Composite or Stratovolcano - Tall volcanoes with steep sides and a symmetrical cone shape, they form from very thick, viscous or sticky lava that won’t flow easily so the lava builds up around the vent
Secondary cone – sometimes the main vent of the volcano, can be blocked so magma can find a way out of the volcano from the side
Ash cloud – a large cloud of smoke and dust that forms over a volcano
