  • In 1971 over 100,000 migrants worked in the textile industry. Pakistani migrants accepted lower wages than British workers and helped the Bradford mills survive
  • In 1971 nearly 300,00 migrants were working in manufacturing and engineering mainly in West Midlands
  • In 1968, TFL had 9,000 out of 73,000 employees whom were from an ethnic minority
  • The NHS launched in 1948 and in 1949 begun recruiting nurses from the Caribbean. By 1965 there were around 5,000 Jamaican nurses
  • 1953-1955, 12% of NHS doctors were trained oversees and many were Jewish and European from Nazi-occupied Europe

  • In 1980 18,000-20,000 NHS doctors born outside the UK with 50% from India and Pakistan
  • In 2003, 29.4% of NHS doctors and 43.5% of UK nurses were migrants
  • Many migrants were forced to olive in run-down and damaged areas of Britain's cities. The migrant communities revitalised these areas as they rebuilt many houses and turned them into comfortable homes
