    • primary: storm surge (people drowned), 90% of tacloban destroyed, tacloban airport terminal damaged, strong winds (power lines and crops destroyed)
    • secondary: 14 million people affected, majority lost their source of income, flooding caused landslides and blocked roads (cut off aid to remote communities) and shortages of food/water (outbreak of diseases - cholera and looting/violence)

    • immediate: international government and aid agencies (philippines red cross) provided food/water, aid and temporary shelters, us aircraft carrier and helicopters assisted with search and rescue/delivery of aid
    • long term: the un, us, uk, japan and australia gave financial aid, supplies and medical support, roads, bridges and airport facilities were rebuilt and rice farming and fishing were re-established to help people get an income
