Group 2 and the halogens

Cards (11)

  • What is the trend of hydroxides of group 2 as you move down the group?
    Solubility pH and Alkalinity increases
  • What are the uses of group 2?
They are bases meaning that they neutrilise acidic things, so can be used in medicine to cure acid indigestion as it neutrilises it to form salt and water. They can also neutrilise acidic soil meaning that crops can be grown in places with bad pollution
  • What is diproportionation?
It is when a species is oxidised and reduced in the same reaction
  • What are group 2 known as?
    alkali metals
  • What are group 2?
Reducing agents as they reduce other species and are oxidised themselves
  • What does reactions of group 2 metals and water form?

    Salt and hydrogen
  • What happens when group 2 metals react with oxygen?

    they form group 2 oxides
  • What is the trends in reactivity down the group of the halogens?
Down the group reactivity decreases due to atomic radius and shielding increasing and less nuclear attraction meaning electrons can be lost more easily
  • What are some uses of halogen?

Chlorine is used in water purification to clean water, it is also used to kill waterborne diseases and bacteria
  • What are some benefits of using chlorine in water?

Kills bacteria, if it wasn't used there would be much greater dangers to water supply
  • What are some risks of adding chlorine to water?
It is a toxic gas which can be an irritant in small concentrations and can be fatal in large concentrations, it can also react with organic hydrocarbons to form chloro hydrocarbons which can be carcinogenic
