A series of compounds that have the same functional group and the same general formula and in which successive members of the series differ by an extra CH2 unit.
What is a functional group?
An atom or a group of atoms that give a compound it's characteristic chemical reactivity.
What does it mean if a compound is saturated?
A saturated organic compound is one which contains only single bonds between carbon atoms.
What are isomers?
Different compounds with the same molecular formula.
What are structural isomers?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formulae.
The branches coming off an alkane are called alkyl groups. They are named by the number of carbons in the branch i.e. methyl, ethyl etc.
