Synapse

• A synapse is the gap between two neurons.
• The message passes over the synapse when the electrical impulse reaches the end of the neuron and transfers into a chemical or neurotransmitter.
• The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse, initiating the action potential in the neurone on the other side.
• At the end of the pre-synaptic neurone there is a swelling called the synaptic bulb.
• ATP is needed for the process to happen, so there are mitochondria at the end of the neurone.
• Neurotransmitters move across the synapse by diffusing.
• Parkinson’s is a problem that can occur.
• The problem with Parkinson’s is not known, but the symptoms include tremors, slow movement, and stiff muscles.
• The treatment for Parkinson’s is L-dopa, which helps by increasing the amount of dopamine in the brain.
• Beta blockers and Prozac can affect the synapse.
