  • Stage 1 of enhanced cognitive interview
Building rapport is building a relationship between the witness and interviewer and transferring control of the interview to the witness. For example, Would you like a tea?
  • Stage 2 of enhanced cognitive interview
Free recall is asking witnesses to report absolutely everything about the crime regardless of the perceived importance of the information. For example, tell me everything that happened.
  • Stage 3 of enhanced Cognitive interview
Reinstating the context is mentally giving cues such as sounds, smells or feelings experienced during the event to trigger memory. For example, what noises did you hear during the shooting?
  • Stage 4 of enhanced cognitive interview
Multiple retrieval which is where you ask the witness to recall the crime in various orders such as starting at the end. This helps to spot deception and trigger new memories.
  • Stage 5 of enhanced cognitive interview
Varied recall is recalling the scene from a different perspective to try trigger new memories. For example recalling the crime from the perspective of someone who saw the criminal
  • Strength 1 of CI
Standardised as same stages are always used. This means can be repeated to check for consistencies increasing the reliability.
  • Weakness 1 of CI
Ignores individual differences in witnesses which is bad as some witnesses may struggle with a stage in the interview such as building rapport due to trust issues. This reduces the validity of the cognitive interview because if rapport isn't established the witness' recall may be less accurate.
