Free floating plants
float freely on the water surface.
Trailing floating plants have
long
and
horizontal stems
(
stolon
).
The
stems
of
trailing
floating
plants
are hollow and can float easily, such as buffalo spinach.
In free floating plants, the
petioles
are
swollen
and
spongy
consisting of numerous air spaces.
The presence of these
air spaces
makes the plants
lighter
and enables them to
float
on
water.
An example of a free floating plant is
water hyacinth.
Submerged floating plants
are plants that are submerged in water but float on the water surface.
In submerged floating plants, the
petioles
are
swollen
and
spongy
consisting of numerous
air spaces.
An example of a submerged floating plant is
water hyacinth.
