  • Why should you goal set?

    Increase motivation
    Increase self-confidence

  • Goal increase performance in 4 ways:
    • by directing attention
    • by regulating the amount of effort that is put into a given task
    • ensuring effort is sustained until the goal is reached
    • by motivating people to develop a variety of strategies to reach their goals
  • SMART goal setting
    • Specific
    • Measurable
    • Achievable
    • Recorded
    • Time bound
  • SMART
    Specific - goals must be relevant to your individual needs
    Measurable - goals need to be assessed to see how well you are doing
    Achievable - goals should be within reach
    Recorded - goals should be recorded so that they can be monitored
    Time bound - goals should be planned over a certain period of time
  • Performance goals:
    • directly related to performance of the activity
    • performance is judged against others performance
    • e.g to improve the batting average for a cricketer
  • Outcome goals:
    • these are concerned with the end result (whether you win or lose)
    • outcome also relates to how others rate your performance
    • e.g win an individual game or a tournament
  • Process goals:
    • goals that are used to improve a skill and are often related to technique and tactics
    • e.g improve a cricketers batting technique
