  • erikson believed personality developed in a series of stages
  • his theory states that the impact of social experience across the whole lifespan is part of our development and growth as human beings
  • he believed that in each stage of development people experience a conflict that serves as a turning point in the development
    in eriksons view he believes that these conflicts either causes us to develop a psychological quality or failing to develop that quality
  • trust vs mistrust - this refers to how infants feel about their environment, if they are cared for properly then they will have positive feelings towards others which leads them to be more open with other people later on in life and feel secure with their relationships
  • if people successfully deal with the conflict then they emerge from the conflict with psychological strengths
  • however if people fail to deal with the conflict then they might not develop these skills needed for a strong sense of life
  • autonomy vs shame and doubt - children begin to assert themselves and become independent but may also experience shame when they do something wrong
  • initiative vs guilt - children start to take responsibility for their actions and make decisions
  • industry vs inferiority - children want to succeed at school and work hard however they can feel like failures if they dont achieve what they set out to do. if children ask many questions and are encouraged to do so then they will confident in their ability to achieve goals. however if they arent encourage to ask questions then they starting doubting their abilities and therefore might not reach their full potential
  • initiative vs guilt - children start to take responsibility for their actions and make decisions however they can feel guilty when things go wrong. when they ask too many questions due to them developing they might overstep the mark and be punished which might make them feel guilty for asking too many question so they wont ask a lot of questions
  • identity vs role confusion - teenagers try to find out who they are and where they fit into society however they can get confused by all the different roles available to them
  • intimacy vs isolation - young adults form close relationships with partners
  • generativity vs stagnation - middle aged adults focus on raising families and helping younger generations
  • ego integrity vs despair - older adults look back over their lives and reflect on whether it was worthwhile however they can feel regretful about missed opportunities
