• osmosis is a special case of diffusion involving water
• osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
• the concentration of water in a solution depends on the concentration of solute and the volume of solution
• if a partially permeable membrane separates two solutions with different solute concentrations, there will be a net movement of water from one solution to another due to osmosis
• if there is more water, it will move to dilute the more salty water and if they are the same, it will move freely
• percentage change = (change in mass / original mass) x100
• change in mass>0 water has moved into cells by osmosis
• change in mass = 0, there is no net movement of water in or out the cells
• change in mass <0, water has moved out of the cells by osmosis
