The PNS transmits messages via neurons (nerve cells) to and from the CNS.
The PNS can be further sub-divided into two more systems: Autonomic and Somatic Nervous Systems.
The Autonomic Nervous System:
Governs vital functions in the body including; breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress response (fight or flight). The ANS can be further sub-divided into two more systems:
The Sympathetic Nervous System: The body’s physically aroused state during stress.
The Parasympathetic Nervous System: The body’s normal resting state.
The Somatic Nervous System:
Controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
