Motor effect

• A current carrying wire in the presence of a magnetic field will experience a force. This is called the motor effect
• To experience a full force, a current carrying wire must be placed perpendicular to the magnetic field
• Flemings left hand rule:

  • Thumb= motion
  • Index finger= field
  • Middle finger= current
• Force on a wire= magnetic field strength x current x length of wire
