  • Accent - the way you pronounce words depending on where you live, country, area or class.
  • Dialect - lexical features or grammatical variations specific to a particular region.
  • Received Pronunciation (RP) - way of pronouncing British English that is often considered to be the Standard accent.
  • Standard English - dialect of English that is considered to have the most prestige + is used in the education system + in formal written texts.
  • Idiolect - speech habits peculiar to a particular person.
  • Sociolect - dialect of a particular social class group.
  • Overt prestige - prestige acquired in a community by using a standard or formal language variety associated with power + status.
  • Covert prestige - high value placed towards a non-standard form of a variety in a speech community.
  • Slang - words or phrases that are considered informal.
  • Taboo - lexical choices which can be deemed offensive, taboo language - inappropriate/ unacceptable.
  • Neologisms - new words that are constantly entering the English language.
  • Occupational register - an occupational register or jargon largely bases on shared understanding between certain groups or individuals.
