topic 1 - chromosomes and mitosis

• chromosomes contain genetic information
• Body cells have 2 copies of each chromosome (one from mother and the other from father)
• Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes
• multicellular organisms use mitosis to grow or replace damaged cells
• mitiosis :

  chromosomes line up and the cell fibres pull them to opposite ends of the cell

  membranes form around each set of chromosomes

  the cytoplasm and membrane divides

  producing two daughter cells that are identical to the original cell
