Newtons Laws

• Newtons first law states that an object will remain at rest or at constant velocity unless acted on by an unbalanced force
• Newtons second law states that if an unbalanced force is applied to a mass it will accelerate
• Friction is a force that opposes motion
• Friction can be reduced by:

  • reducing surface area
  • streamlining
  • using lubrication
  • making surfaces smoother
• Weight is the downward force due to gravity
• In different parts of the universe, weight can change due to different gravities
• In different parts of the universe, mass stays the same
• Newtons third law states that every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force.
• When in freefall you experience weightlessness
• The reading on a Newton balance during freefall would be 0N
• Terminal velocity happens when air resistance equals weight, forces are balanced and so continue at a constant velocity
