  • Monophonic - 1 layer of sound
  • Unison - More than one player playing the same note at the same pitch
  • Octaves - More than one instrument playing the same melody, with the same notes, but at different pitches
  • Homophonic/Chordal - More than one instrument playing notes at the same time, but at different pitches
  • Polyphonic - More than one melody playing at the same time. Often weaving out of each other. It is difficult to know which part to sing along to.
  • Melody & Accompaniment - One clear melody with other instruments playing in the background
  • Counter Melody - Second melody added to the first melody
  • Canon - A piece of instruments or voices that sing or play the same music starting at different times
  • Imitation - A slight change to an idea that is presented on one instrument or voice
  • Descant - Added in final verses in hymns and in christmas carols
