Peterson & Peterson study

Cards (7)

  • Peterson and Peterson experiment 1= consisted of 24 student volunteers who were asked to recall a list of trigrams (3 random letters)
  • Peterson/peterson- made participants count back in 3s and 4s. with 15 seconds between each trigram
  • P&P= is tested 8 times in the spam of 3secs, 6secs, 9secs, 12secs, 15secs, 18secs
  • in experiment two= the same participants were allowed to use ‘vocal conditioning’ (reappear the trigrams aloud before counting backwards)
  • Experiment 1 findings- after 3secs 80% could recall the trigrams, after 18 secs 10% could recall the trigrams
  • Experiment 2 findings- the vocal group improved with repetition, the longer the repetition, the more accurate the recall
  • conclusion of the study: information fades rapidly from the STM, shorts term memory has limited duration of 18 secs
