Always occurs between metals (group 1 and 2) and non metals (group 6 and 7)
Involves electron transfer from the metal to the non-metal
Always produces charged ions
Positive ions are called cations
Negative ions are called anions
Ionic bonded molecules form a giant three dimensional lattice of ions which are strongly attracted to each other due to opposite charges on the ions. There is also repulsion between ions of the same charge
The forces between these ions are very strong electrostatic forces
