Ionic Bonding

Cards (7)

  • Always occurs between metals (group 1 and 2) and non metals (group 6 and 7)
  • Involves electron transfer from the metal to the non-metal
  • Always produces charged ions
  • Positive ions are called cations
  • Negative ions are called anions
  • Ionic bonded molecules form a giant three dimensional lattice of ions which are strongly attracted to each other due to opposite charges on the ions. There is also repulsion between ions of the same charge
  • The forces between these ions are very strong electrostatic forces
