  • What is internalisation?
Personal opinions genuinely change to match the group. This is a permanent change in beliefs
  • What is compliance?
When we agree with the group publicly but keep our personal opinions. Results in a temporary change in behaviour
  • Internalisation- think the group is right
    Genuinely accepting group norms
results in private as well as public change of opinions/behaviour.
Change is usually permanent and persist in the absence of group members
    • because attitudes have become internalised
  • Identification- value the group
When we identify with a group that we value, we want to become a part of it. So we publicly change our opinions/behaviour even if we don’t privately agree with everything the group stands for.
  • Compliance- temporary agreement
Involves going along with others in public but privately not changing opinions/behaviours.
Results in only a superficial change and the opinion/behaviour stops as soon as group pressure ceases.
