Dipole-dipole

Cards (5)

  • This occurs in polar molecules
  • An example is hydrogen chloride where there is a slight negative charge on the chlorine atom and a slight positive charge on the hydrogen atom.
  • Bonding electrons spend more time towards the more electronegative atom as it attracts the bonding electrons stronger
  • The presence of a dipole within a molecule significantly alters the physical properties as the possibility of an electrostatic force of attraction between neighbouring molecules arises.
  • Non polar (non dipole) molecules have a lower boiling point than polar molecules as they do not have strong electrostatic forces of attraction between molecules
