Schleicher felt threatened by the Nazis’ illegal and unconstitutional behaviour. He offered Hitler the role of Chancellor in his government provided that he, Schleicher, would be in charge of defence. Hitler refused.
Without Nazi support, Schleicher was unable to gain parliamentary support for his government he needed to address the social and economic problems facing Germany.
President Hindenburg, frustrated with Schleicher, demanded his resignation and proposed a new government with Hitler as Chancellor and Von Papen as Vice-Chancellor. The new government was appointed on 30th January 1933.
