resentment to treaty

Cards (6)

    • Many Germans believed that they had not actually lost WWI but instead had been ‘stabbed in the back’.
    • Some Germans nicknamed the leaders who signed the armistice the ‘November Criminals.’
    • Germany took the blame for starting the war.
    • Germany lost territory, including areas with large German populations (such as the Sudetenland)
    • Germany lost control of all their overseas territories.
  • The Treaty of Versailles was very harsh on Germany. It included reparations payments which were so high that it would take years to pay them off. This meant that many people suffered from poverty and unemployment.
  • ANALYSIS (FOR)
    • One of the Nazis’ main promises was to reverse the Treaty of Versailles, winning them support. The reparations from the Treaty led to hyperinflation, causing economic problems and anger, again winning votes for the Nazis.
  • ANALYSIS (AGAINST)
    • Not all of Germany’s economic problems were not because of the Treaty. The Great Depression of the late 1920’s was a global event.
    • Many parties opposed the Treaty but it was the Nazi’s who gained the most votes, suggesting Hitler’s own skills helped too.
  • EVALUATION (AGAINST)
    • The treaty was signed in 1919 but Nazis gained mass following in 1932.
    • Other elections throughout the 1920s in which Nazis did not gain a great following in.
