reformation

Cards (11)

  • Reformation aims to help individuals who have broken the law to change their behaviour and become law-abiding citizens.
  • This is achieved by providing education, counselling, job training, and other programs that can help offenders learn new skills and adopt new values that will help them to avoid committing crimes in the future.
  • The idea is that if offenders are given the opportunity to reform themselves, they will be less likely to engage in criminal behaviour, which will ultimately benefit society as a whole.
  • ISSUE: Some people argue that the time, effort and money spent on reforming criminals could instead be spent on the victims of crime. It is unfair that the offender is benefiting from their negative actions, while the victim may not receive the same level of support and resources.
  • ISSUE: Some critics view reformation programs as being too soft on offenders. They argue that offenders should be held accountable for their actions and that rehabilitation programs should not be seen as a replacement for punishment.
  • CHRISTIAN RESPONSE: Support reformative punishments because they believe that everyone can change for the better, no matter what they have done. There have been a few Church of Scotland ministers’ who are ex-offenders, and who are now good living people making a positive difference in other people’s lives
  • CHRISTIAN RESPONSE: Christians don't believe this is a necessary part of forgiveness, but they do believe that forgiveness is easier if the offender shows a serious intention to repent and change their ways so they can start afresh. This is why many Christians believe that reformation should be the primary aim of punishment.
  • CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
God wants people to have a second chance. Jonah disobeyed God, but God still gave him a chance to change. So therefore in favour of reformation.
  • BUDDHIST RESPONSE
For Buddhism, it is the main aim of punishment. The Buddhist attitude towards criminals is focused in a way so that they may be reformed and rehabilitated to be good citizens
  • UTILITARIAN RESPONSE
In favour as it satisfies the GHP as by reforming people you are helping them, their families and helping society as they no longer pose a threat.
  • KANTIAN RESPONSE
Arguably in favour, the main focus is helping the individual. Want every criminal to reform, yes. Doesn't seem to treat them as means to an end as the focus is helping them enable their ways.
ANALYSIS: Is actually using them as a means to an end as really helping society so Kantians can't support this.
