(WN) Cliffs & Wave-cut Platforms:

Cards (2)

  • Highly destructive waves (due to strong prevailing winds off the North Sea), combined with soft erodible material (sandy Red Crag on top of London Clay) has created steep cliffs along the coastline. Under cutting through hydraulic action and abrasion at high tide, causes rotational slumping and therefore removal of the cliff.
  • Where the slightly more resistant rock (London Clay) and high water mark coincide a wave-cut platform has been formed which extendsout into the sea.
