  • Did not want to punish Germany too harshly . Afraid Germany might seek revenge and start another war.
  • Concerned that a harsh treaty might initiate a communist uprising.
  • Wanted to reinitiate trade between Germany and Britain . Before the war Germany had been Britain's second biggest trading partner.
  • Wanted Germany to lose it's navy so that Britain could have monopoly over the sea . Also wanted to take over German colonies.
  • David Lloyd George was a realist and an able politician . He occupied the middle ground between views of Wilson and Clemenceau.
  • Lloyd George was under pressure from home for a harsh treaty . Britain had suffered around 1 million casualties , food shortages and hardships. The had been fed anti - German propaganda for four years and had seen the brutal treaty the German's had enforced on Russian in 1918 when Russia surrendered in the treaty of Brest - Litovsk.
  • Lloyd George wasn't particularly happy about the second point in the 14 points which allowed all nations to access the sea . He wanted to maintain monopoly over the sea.
  • He wasn't happy with Wilson's notion of encouragement of nation's ruling themselves as Britain had many colonies.
