The Treaty of Versailles

Cards (7)

  • Was signed in the Paris Peace Conference on June 28, 1919. Ironic as the German empire was declared at the Palace of Mirrors 50 years ago.
  • War guilt clause : Germany had to accept that they had started the war.
  • Reparations clause : Germany had to pay the allies an amount of money to compensate them for the damage they had caused . The money to paid was 6,600 million pounds.
  • German territories and colonies :
Germany's colonies in Africa were made mandates and placed under the League of Nations. Britain and France were given temporary governance until the countries could be independent. This was to show Germany how powerless it was now.
However , Britain kept colonizing more land - this shows their hypocrisy.
  • League of Nations : It was Wilson's brainchild a predecessor to the UN. It's aim was to bring world peace. Germany was not invited to join.
  • Rhineland : The Rhineland was demilitarized meaning no military bases or weapons allowed. This was done because the French feared invasion from Germany. However , this angered Germans who felt like they were being treated unfairly.
  • Disarmament : All signatories agreed to disarm but Germany was forced to reduce its army to 100,000 men.
    Conscription was banned .
Germany wasn't allowed armored vehicles, submarines or aircraft.
The navy could only have six battleships.
    Had to demilitarize Rhineland,
This left them vulnerable to attack.
