Cogonitve Approach

Cards (6)

  • Cognitive Approach
    • Discusses that behaviour is influenced by thoughts that can be both conscious and unconscious
    • Argues that our minds works like computers
  • Schemas
    • A schema is a "packet of information" that allows the organisation of information to be smoother based on our experiences
    • Babies are born with " simple motor schemas" for simple concepts such as grasping and sucking. However they will develop overtime with EXPERIENCE
    • A problem with schemas is that they lead to the development of stereotypes.
  • We can use Theortical Models to explain our mental processes
    • An example is the Multi Store Model.
  • We also use Computer Models to explain our mental processes as the way we process information is very similar.
    • This can be seen through the Brain changing information into useable codes so we can store information.
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
    • the study of the biological structures which influence mental processes
    • We can observe brain imaging techniques like FRMI AND PET.
  • DOUBLE DISSOCATION - when two related mental processes are shown to function independently of each other.
    • Example - Speech and Language Comprehension
    • When the BROCAS area is damaged, patients will understand Language but cant speak fluently
    • When the WERNICKES area is damaged, patients can speak fluently but their speech will be nonsensical
