• The US created a network of anti-communist alliances worldwide to which they gave money, advice and arms. In return, the leaders of these countries suppressed communism.
• The USSR saw these alliances as aggressive and accused the USA of attempted to encircle the communist world.
• in 1955, the USSR set up the Warsaw pact, which included the USSR and all the eastern European countries
