  • the USA provided the Cuban ruler, General Batista, with economic and military support. Batista was a dictator. His rule was corrupt and unpopular. The Americans supported Batista because he was against communism.
  • in 1959, after 3 years of revolution, Fidel Castro overthrew Batista. Fidel Castro had won over the majority of Cuba.
  • Relations between the USA and Cuba became worse because Cubans in the USA formed powerful political pressure groups demanding action against Castro and because Castro took American-owned business land and distributed it to his supporters among Cuba's peasant farmer population.
  • in 1960, President Eisenhower told the CIA to find ways to overthrow Castro. The USA looked to disrupt the Cuban economy by destroying sugar plantations. The US broadcasted a relentless stream of criticism of Castro.
  • Castro allowed the USA to keep its naval base and assured Americans that they would be safe in Cuba. However, he allied with the USSR and signed a trade agreement worth $100 million in economic aid and also received arms from the USSR
