For Khrushchev and USSR

• In public Khrushchev was able to highlight his role as a peacemaker
• Keeping Cuba safe from American attack was a major achievement for the USSR. Cuba was a valuable ally an proved a useful base from which to support communists in South America.
• Khrushchev got the USA to withdraw its nuclear weapons from Turkey. However, this was a secret, so he couldn't use it as propaganda
• The USA was criticised by its own allies who said that it was unreasonable to have missiles in Turkey and not allow the USSR to have nuclear weapons in Cuba
• The USSR felt the terms for peace were humiliating and that the USSR were forced to back down to the USA
• The USSR was still behind the USA in the arms race
• In 1964, Khrushchev was forced down from power by his enemies in the USSR
