In 1923, French and Belgian soldiers entered the Ruhr region and took what was owed to them in the form of raw materials and goods. The German government ordered the workers to go on strike so they weren't producing anything. The French then killed over 100 workers and expelled over 100000 protestors. For the Germans, this meant that they had no goods to trade with and no money to buy things. This led to hyperinflation.
