  • The slave trade began in Europe at ports such as London, Bristol, Liverpool which were in England; Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Nantes and Bordeaux in France.
  • From Europe, the ships sailed to west Africa.
  • In west Africa, the ships docked at ports such as Axim, El Mina - Accra, Bonny.
  • The slaves were loaded onto the ships and began a 6-12 week voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean, a journey known as the middle passage.
  • This journey began in the Caribbean and ended at a European port.
  • Bridgetown and Kingston were two Caribbean ports heavily involved in the slave trade.
  • The items taken from the Caribbean to Europe include sugar, rum and molasses, with cotton being taken from America back to Europe.
