  • WHAT
    • A plique-a-jour enamelling technique is used on the brooch.
    • This is done by creating a framework of wire onto a metal base, which is then filled with coloured glass dust, and then fired so that it melts into place, forming coloured enamel.
    • Acid is then used to dissolve away the backing, leaving the transparency of the enamel so that the light can shine through it.
  • WHERE
    • In the honeycomb pattern evident in the dragonfly wings.
  • WHY
    • The combination of the gold framework and clear enamel gives a stained glass window effect which adds to the realistic and delicate nature of the wings.
    • The shimmering quality makes it feel expensive and luxurious.
    • Plique-a-jour was particularly successful in creating insect wings as the linear framework can easily represent the veins.
