Long-shore drift from South to North has gradually transported sediment Northwards along the coastline. Where the coastline changes direction a Spit has begun to form.
Behind the protective Naze, wave energy is greatly decreased, allowing for deposition of material and the formation of marsh-land creating the Hamford Water National Nature Reserve.
