Microscopes

    Cards (7)

    • Electron microscopes:
Produces an electron beam which has a short wavelength, meaning that is has a high-resolution power.
Require very specific conditions so cannot study living organisms.
    • Transmission electron microscope – Consists of an electron gun which produces a beam of electrons passing through the specimen.
    • Scanning electron microscope – Bounces electrons off the surface of a specimen to provide a 3D image by analysing how the electrons were scattered.
    • Magnification = Image size \ Actual size
    • Magnification is the ratio of the size of the image to the size of the object.
    • Resolution is the minimum distance apart that two objects can be and still distinguished as separate objects.
    • Light microscopes produce beams of visible light which pass through the sample and is bent through the glass lens system, allowing the user to see a magnified image.
