• Soldiers feared attacks the top because:

  • Long range artillery could kill its own troops
  • planes could drop shells from above
  • dug outs could collapse
  • you could get tangled in barbed wire
  • when shells exploded , shrapnel flew everywhere
• The western front crossed Belgian and France and stretched for 400 miles from the English Channel to Switzerland
