Albert Bandura’s SLT is based on his observations of learning occurring through observing the behaviour of others.
Bandura suggested there were four stages of behavioural learning.
1. The child notices the behaviour of another person; this is likely to be someone close to them or who they admire, such as an older sibling (this is called identification).
2. The child internalises the action by remembering what they have observed.
3. Although they may not copy straight away, they will reproduce the behaviour when the opportunity occurs.
4. Depending on the outcome (positive or negative reinforcement) children will either repeat the behaviour or desist.
Once learned, aggressive behaviour is more likely to generalise to different situations and across time
