deism as a response to the rise of science:
belief in an intelligent but impersonal creator - one who created the universe then left it to its own free devices
offers a religious way of explaining the predictable nature of the universe
not easily challenged by science as it does not depend on God doing anything in the world
John Polkinghorne challenges Deism:
the whole idea of God revolves around him being personal - people can interact through prayer
an impersonal deistic idea of God is just an intellectual idea, it is not the same as Christian belief in a God which people can have a personal relationship with
existentialism as a response to the rise of science:
based on the idea that humans create their own personal reality through the choices they make - we shape the world we have
