  • The looking glass self
    the process wherein individuals base their sense of self on how they believe others view them. Using social interaction as a type of “mirror,” people use the judgments they receive from others to measure their own worth, values, and behavior.
  • Halo effect
    type of cognitive bias in which our overall impression of a person influences how we feel and think about their character.
  • Pivotal identity
    a core identity providing a pivot which teachers use to interpret and reinterpret classroom events and student behaviour.
  • Self fulfilling prophecy
    is a prediction that comes true at least in part as a result of a person's belief or expectation that said prediction would come true. Self-fulfilling prophecies are an example of the more general phenomenon of positive feedback loops.
  • Ideal Pupil
    Just as teachers might label some pupils as troublemakers or lacking in ability, teachers are also likely to have an image in their minds of the ideal pupil: hard-working, conscientious and studious, helpful and articulate.
  • Educational Triage
    classify the educational needs of each student. That is determining the most appropriate form of teaching to facilitate learning.
