The brain

• Cerebral cortex - outer layer of the brain, responsible for conscious thought and memory
• Cerebellum - controls muscle coordination, balance, and posture.
• Hypothalamus - controls the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system
• Medulla - controls unconscious activities such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
• How scientists study the brain:

  1. Study those with brain damage
  2. electrically stimulate the brain
  3. Brain scanning - CT (x-rays) , PET scan (radioactive chemicals) , MRI scan (magnetic fields)
