Finishing

Cards (8)

  • Wax is used to protect wood against staining, clear finish where you can still see the grain.
  • The wood should be sanded to remove all pencil marks, blemishes and rough edges.
  • If the finish chosen shows the grain, a light wash of water can be added to raise the grain.
  • The wood should be left to dry then sanded down again before adding the finish.
  • Veneer is a thin layer of natural hardwood, that is then bonded to a manmade board or cheaper softwood.
  • Varnish protects the wood without changing its colour dramatically.
  • Stain changes the colour of the wood but the grain is still visible.
  • Paint comes in a variety of colours and hides the grain of the wood.
