Hardening and tampering

• The high speed steel is heated until red hot and then cooled quickly.
• The tool is then tempered by heating the tip slowly until it turns blue.
• The heat is then removed.
• High speed steel is used to create tools such as screwdrivers, woodwork lathe tools and axes.
